This is a video dance project video created during the Covid19 quarantine, as part of an effort to keep the members of the company “alive” and active in the field of artistic creation using every possible way. A human body unites and communicates with the home’s “body”, its framework. Human limbs are delimited and delineate the individual parts of the building. They decorate the space through their movement. They are integrated into the environment and incorporate (embody) its elements. They become almost one.
Maria Garefi is a Greek dance practitioner based in Thessaloniki. She graduated from the Pedagogical Department, from the MA "History of Philosophy", from a Higher Professional School of Dance in Thessaloniki and from ReDance, a one-year postgraduate program regarding contemporary dance and performance. She has participated in numerous workshops of classical ballet and contemporary dance both at home and abroad. She introduced herself to the audience of Thessaloniki and Athens as an independent artist through her participations in festivals as a choreographer and performer, as well as by presenting personal performances in collaboration with artists from the city. She is founding member and choreographer of the Faos dance company and dance teacher of professional and amateur classes of classical ballet, contemporary dance and improvisation. She is deeply invested in physical exploration and kinesiological experimentation. She uses improvisation and emotional expression as a strong basis for choreographic composition and is particularly attracted to material that can be drawn from the imaginary space and the subconscious. Last March she participated as an up-and-coming choreographer in the 10 th International Choreographers Week in Tilburg in order to further explore and develop as a creator.
Faos is a dance company set up by independent choreographers and performers based in Thessaloniki. The name, Faos, is an ancient Greek noun which means 'light'. From darkness to light, and from light back again into the dark. The eternal controversy of opposites. We choose light, but many times we also crave for its absence. The inception and creation of this company is driven by the desire of its members to co-create and research the subject of their upcoming first production (in)Somnia (choreography: Maria Garefi). The company is run based on the personal identities and kinesiological diversity of its members. It is a union of people with different origins of movement, who are invited to collaborate and interact. The aim is to be constantly restless, research and create in order to develop an artistic action through dance-theater projects.
